Notes:: The following account of Martin Judy Gossett's death was related by Melissa Smather-Barnes, a descendant of Lucy Atkinson "Bambi" Gossett Smathers, a sister of Martin Judy Gossett. Melissa Smathers-Barnes is the Director of the Mt. Sterling - Montgomery Cnty, KY Library System, living in Bethel, Bath, KY in May, 2010.

During the Civil War Union Army members had come to the farm of Martin and Mary Gossett. Women and children weren't there while Martin and John Matthias remained to protect their home. When the troops arrived at the farm both Martin and John hid in different places. When the troops left, Martin thought they had captured John. Martin came out of hiding and called his name

Martin J Gossett married twice, correct order not known. Judging by data on 1880 census on Samuel, he (Samuel) and John Matthias Gossett are half-brothers (and states this in a letter from John Mathias Gossett to William Thompson Gossett, January 16, 1913).

Martin J. Gossett was first married abt 1839.
