Doug Lee submits: From "The History of Spartanburg County" by J.B.O. Landrum. This book contains a biographical sketch and photo of Captain J.F. Sloan on pages 593 thru 596. Excerpts from the Biographical Sketch of his military career shows that his military service was not limited to just Holcombe Legion and the 5th State Troops."Captain Sloan came to Spartanburg County in 1843 and settled near Rich Hill. Some time after this he was elected captain of a militia company which formed a part of the 37th Regiment, S.C.M., in which capacity and that of Adjutant of said regiment he served until the outbreak of the Civil War between the States.""Upon the approach of hostilities between the States he was elected Second lieutenant of Batesville Volunteers (Capt. John J. Brown), which company volunteered as Minute Men, and upon receiving the news of the bombardment of Fort Sumter, entered the service upon a notice of two days. After six weeks' service on Sullivan's Island, S.C., the company disbanded and went home.""When, however, in 1861, the Confederate government had called for troops, Captain Sloan raised a company of 80 odd men, which eventually reached 115, and was elected its captain, which was known as Co. B, Holcombe Legion.""In 1862 when the army was reorganized in Virginia this company revolunteered, reelecting Captain Sloan as its commander. For being the best drilled and disciplined company in Holcombe Legion, it received the first distribution of Enfield Rifles, which the surviors carried to the end of the war.""Captain Sloan, on account of ill health, and by the advice and certificate of his regimental surgeon, resigned and returned home.""As soon, however, as he had recovered, he reentered the service and became Adjutant and 2nd Lieutenant of Major Joel Ballinger's Battalion of State (S.C.) Reserves, which formed a part of Blanchard's Brigade, and which performed during the last days of the Confederacy distinguished and fatiguing service, confronting the army of General Sherman, marching four or five hundred miles, and being the last to yield in that great struggle for Southern liberty. In this famous march Captain Sloan performed his part of it in a pair of wooden-bottomed shoes."
